Difference between zener and avalanche breakdown
1. Zener breakdown occurs in heavily doped diodes while avalanche breakdown occurs in lightly doped diodes.
2. In zener breakdown, ionization takes place by electric field. In avalanche breakdown, ionization takes place by collisions.
3. First one occurs even with less than 5V while avalanche occurs at higher voltages.
4. After the breakdown voltage across the zener diode is constant. After the breakdown voltage across the pn diode is not constant.
