Difference between Minimum and Maximum Thermometers

1 When temperature rises, the mercury expands and pushes the index along the tube. When the temp rises, the alcohol expands but the index stays where it is.
2 When temperature falls, the mercury contracts but the index stays where it was pushed to by mercury. When temperature falls, the alcohol contracts and its meniscus pulls the index along the tube.
3 The maximum temperature is at the point where the index is. The index is then drawn back to the mercury by magnet for next reading. It is read the same way as the maximum thermometer.
