Difference between Ammeter and Ohm Meter

1. The ammeter measures current while Ohm meter measures resistance.

2. The ammeter is connected in series while Ohm meter is connected in parallel.

3. While using ammeter positive and negative terminal needs to be aligned with a circuit, while checking current. We dont need to take care of positive and negative terminals while calculating resistance in Ohm meter.

Ammeter

An ammeter is a device that measures current. The name "ammeter" comes from the fact that it is a meter used to measure current (in amperes), and thus is called an AMpere METER, or AMMETER.

An ammeter is an instrument for measuring the electric current in amperes in a branch of an electric circuit. It must be placed in series with the measured branch, and must have very low resistance to avoid significant alteration of the current it is to measure. The ammeter is also used the principle of d’Arsonval meter movement with slight modification.

Ammeter is connected in series with the load.

Uses of ammeter

An ammeter is used to measure the amount of current flowing in the circuit.

Ohmmeter

An ohmmeter is an instrument used to measure resistance and check the continuity of electrical circuits and component. This resistance reading is indicated through a meter movement. An ohmmeter is also known as resistance meter. It is not fitted permanently on the vehicle but is used separately whenever required. It has its own built-in power source. Hence the device/ circuit being checked with the ohmmeter should be discon- nected from the power supply, to prevent damage to the ohmmeter. The unit of resistance is an ohm.

Uses of ohmmeter

An ohmmeter is used:

  • to measure the resistance of any conductor
  • to measure the resistance of any load
  • to check the continuity of the field coils.
