Differences between Glacial Valleys and River Valleys

1 Glacial valleys tend to be U-shaped. River valeys tend to be U-shaped, V-shaped or parabolic shape.
2 Glacial valleys are formed when glaciers move from higher altitude to lower altitude due to rise in temperature. The glacier cuts the earth surface making a valley. River valley is formed with the continuous flow of river water causing soil erosion thereby making a valley.
3 The formation of glacial valleys does not depend on the gradient but only the volume of the glacier. Larger glaciers carve larger, wider valleys. River valleys are formed due to the kinetic energy of rivers falling from a steep height.
