Five Questions to Ask Potential Wedding Catering Teams

When you are hiring catering teams for a wedding, it can be tempting to choose the team that is located nearest to you. However, when you are selecting a team to cater your wedding, you can whittle down your list to your perfect caterers by asking the following questions in your initial contact with the team.

Are You Available to Cater Our Wedding?

When you are looking to book a wedding catering team, you should ask if they are available to cater your wedding. Catering teams will usually start prepping and cooking the food a few days before, so don't assume that your wedding day is only the day itself.

Have You Catered a Wedding Like Ours Before?

Not all weddings are the same. Some weddings are larger, some are smaller, and when you hire a catering team, you will want to make sure that they have catered to a wedding that is the same size as yours, as well as making sure that they have catered to different dietary restrictions before. It is also worth asking about cultural elements if they apply.

What Kind of Catering Do You Offer?

Most catering teams that oversee weddings will offer one of two different types of catering. The first, and most common, is a buffet or drop-off catering. This is when the food is prepared off-site, and is dropped off at the reception location. Next, for events that are smaller (or if you have a bigger budget), there is the option for plated catering. This is where the food is cooked at the site of the reception, plated, and served to guests, usually with the additional costs of renting plates and cutlery. Of course, there are other options, such as food stations, but these are more specialized.

What's Included in Your Quote?

It is imperative to ask what is included in the quote for your wedding catering team. Do they charge for drop-off? How much do they charge for hiring additional staff if you're opting for plated food? Is there a cost for food that doesn't contain gluten? Always ask, and if you aren't sure, don't assume! You don't want to get caught out with costs around a wedding date.

Do You Offer Tastings?

Few people would buy a car without driving it first, so when you are looking to hire a catering team, be sure to ask if they offer tasting sessions. These are exactly what they sound like: you will usually attend their bakery or restaurant to have sample plates of their food. Be aware that these may or may not be free, or if you book the team, these may go from being charged to being free. So, ask if they offer tastings, ask about the price, and then book the session.

Long story short, when you are booking a catering team for your wedding, be sure to ask early to prevent disappointment later. Ideally, aim to book your catering team around six months before your wedding, as this will help you to have adequate time to attend tastings or to make adjustments to your wedding day menu.
